Description
This wonderful Miriam Haskell chain is quite rare because of its unusual and opulent length, an amazing56 1/2 inches. The chain can also be dated to the mid-late 1970s. This type of oval "Miriam Haskell" stamped tag was in use from the early 1950s to the late 1970s: one side is stamped "Miriam Haskell," but "Miriam Haskell" on the reverse is backwards because of the stamping- - -a reverse stamp on the back of the tag. By the late 1970s, this type of tag had been phased-out.
The clasp on this necklace was a new type that Haskell patented and started using in 1975. It is a "slide clasp" that has the patent number on it. It was in use from 1975 - 1985. Consequently, it is possible to date the necklace to the mid to late 1970s because use of this patented clasp starts in the mid-1970s, but the inverted Haskell tag was discontinued by the late 1970s.
Another point to consider is the composition of the metal, which is always referred to as "Russian Gold" for this type of Haskell chain. True "Russian Gold" does have some small amount of real gold alloyed into the copper. We have no way of knowing for sure if this is the case for this chain, but it does have a lovely "rose gold" tone. Please come to your own conclusions.
