Posts on the tool are removable allowing for removal of the 2 different spring tensioner shoes.

About premature tensioner shoe wear:
The tensioner shoes on the 1999-2005 Twin Cams have been shown to wear out as early as a few thousand miles or in some cases as long as 50,000 miles.  There are many possible reasons, but one that may make sense is that the die that Harley's Timing Chain Manufacturer uses to stamp out the plates for the timing chains wears out after a certain number of stamps. When worn, it was possible that a burr could be left on the outside of the chain which cuts through the nylon shoe. It might help explain why some fail early and others not at all. This burr would cause a new tensioner to wear out prematurely as well and it is recommended to inspect the outside of the timing chain for any burrs and remove them with a file. There may be other causes of failure, but this simple inspection and repair may save you from another tensioner shoe failure.
