OLIVE FREMSTAD
This is a signed letter by
Olive Fremstad (1871-1951),
a famous
Swedish-American opera diva who sang
in
both the soprano and mezzo-soprano ranges.
She appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
from 1903 until 1914, specializing in Wagnerian roles.
She sang the role of Carmen opposite Enrico Caruso
in San Francisco on the night before the city was
destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire.
She made approximately forty recordings between
1911 and 1915, of which only fifteen were ever
released. Music critic J.B. Steane has called
Fremstad
"
one of the greatest of Wagnerians
".
This letter is handwritten on a 7" by 10" sheet
of stationery of the
Warwick Hotel
, located
at 65 West 54th Street, New York.
The letter is dated October 30, but no year
is given.
The Warwick
Hotel opened in 1927,
so this letter must have
been written sometime
between 1927 and 1951.
It is addressed to "
My dear Doctor West "
.
Unfortunately, I do not know
who "
Doctor West
"
was.
The letter reads as follows:
October 30th
My dear Doctor West,
What a friendly, kindly
thought that was! The delicate
pansies so sweet and fresh.
Do not think me strange
that I do not call you on the
telephone and at least say
a friendly "Hallo". That time
will soon come and then I shall
have more to say - of the "hope
that is in me". It has been an
uphill road but I am ??????
in more ways than one and
when the time comes I want
to tell you about it.
In the meantime I shall
never forget your sympathy and
friendliness to
me.
