Description

Autographed and inscribed first edition second volume of "Scenes and Dances from the Ballet The Bronze Horseman" for pianoforte, 1949. The score is inscribed to the Bolshoi Chief Ballet Conductor, Yuri Fayer, Moscow, June 10, 1949.

This score which clearly states second volume was printed by the State Musical Publishing House in the year of the World Premiere of the ballet. The first page of music is on page 3 and ends on page 41. The last page of music is blank and an erratum page is inserted after the page. The work is broken up into 6 parts. The printed edition according to the technical page was 3,000 copies.
The ballet itself is written in the traditional Russian Romantic style and is in 3 acts. If one listens to the suite from the Ballet one could find themselves transported back to the ballets of the late 19th Century. The work is based on a poem by Pushkin about the bronze statue of Peter the Great. The libretto was written by Piotr Abolimov. Gliere was working on the ballet in early 1941 and it was put down due to the War and completed in February, 1949. The World Premiere took place in Leningrad, given by the Kirov Ballet on March 14, 1949 starring Natalia Dudinskaya and Constantin Sergeev The Moscow Premiere at the Bolshoi was conducted by Fayer with Galina Ulanova and Mikhail Gabovich on June 29, 1949. The work was most recently revived at the Mariinsky Theatre by the Kirov Ballet in 2016.
The dedicatee Yuri Fayer (1890-1971) was the Chief Ballet Conductor at the Bolshoi from 1923-1963. From a poor Jewish family, he learned to play the violin at an early age. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory but had to withdraw for financial reasons. In order to make money he began conducting opera in Riga, then he assembled his own orchestra and toured throughout Russia. He compiled enough funds to re-enter the Moscow Conservatory, subsidizing his life playing violin at the Bolshoi. He was asked to substitute for a conductor who was indisposed for a Bolshoi performance and his career changed overnight. As Chief Ballet Conductor, Fayer was a living legend at the Bolshoi. He led many World Premieres including Prokofiev's ballets, "Cinderella" and "The Stone Flower". Prokofiev also consulted Fayer while he was writing "Romeo and Juliet". Fayer also led the Bolshoi premieres of Gliere's ballet "The Red Poppy" in 1949, the same year as "The Bronze Hoseman".
