Score of the American composer, pianist, conductor, and educator's piano work "Variations in G" (1949), initialed by him on the title page with his address. He has penned at the lower left of the title: "L. S. / 39 Dorchester Rd. / Buffalo, N. Y. 14222 / USA." [PN] B. & H. 17392. 19 pp. Light overall toning and some slight edge wear, but overall very fine. 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.3 cm).
Leo Smit's career spanned seven decades of musical life in the United States. A friend and colleague of many of the most important musical figures of the twentieth century, he had close relationships with Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Harold Shapero, William Schuman, Alex Haieff, Leopold Stokowski, and Lukas Foss, among others, and was a strong advocate and performer of contemporary music, as well as the composer of more than 100 works. His First Symphony was premiered in 1957 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
