Concert program from a Saturday, March 25, 1939 Popular Concert (Students') performance with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, signed to program listing by the American violinist. The performance, which featured Knitzer as soloist for pieces by Chausson and Ravel, also included works by Weber, Brahms, and Weinberger. 8 pp. Very fine. 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm.).
As a child, Knitzer studied with Leopold Auer in New York City from about 1923 until Auer's death in 1930. He made his debut with the New York Symphony in 1927 under Walter Damrosch and with the Detroit Symphony in 1930, and won the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation prize in violin in 1934
. In the later 1930s, Joseph Knitzer pursued a solo violin career, but with limited success. By the early 1940s, Joseph Knitzer was head of the violin department at the Cleveland Institute of Music prior to joining the Cleveland Orchestra.
Following the Cleveland Orchestra, Joseph Knitzer had a rich experience as a violin teacher. He taught successively at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Northwestern University in Chicago, the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and the University of Michigan.
