Frieda Hempel was a German soprano singer in operatic and concert work who had
an international career in Europe and the United States. She sang at the Royal Court
Opera in Berlin, Convent Garden in London and in 1912 made her debut at the
Metropolitan Opera House in New York. After 1919 she devoted herself to a very
successful second career of concert recitals and left the Metropolitan Opera somewhat
abruptly, making way for the career of Amelita Galli-Curci.
