    Description

You are bidding on inscribed autograph of COUNT GEZA ZICHY (1849-1924), piano student of FRANZ LISZT.
5" x 8-1/2" inscription is matted on 8-1/4" x 12" green matte. There is a loose white sheet taped to reverse.
ZICHY was a Hungarian composer who came from a noble family and held the title COUNT VAZSONYKO. He began studying piano as a child with Liszt. Tragically, Zichy lost his right arm in a hunting accident at age 14.
Still determined to become a pianist, he persevered by writing and performing piano music for the left hand. In spite of his limitations. Zichy had a successful career as both a concert pianist and a composer. He gave entire concerts playing music only for the left hand.  He was known for his artistic sensitivity as well as dextrous playing and had several admirers, including List who wrote reviews of his performances in letters to friends. Among Zichy's many compositions was a left hand piano concerto and several operas. In addition to his music career, Zichy also worked as a lawyer. He was also the director of the Royal Hungarian Operahouse.
An entire chapter is devoted to Zichy in PIANO MUSIC FOR ONE HAND by Theodore Edel (Indiana University Press), a comprehensive survey of music written for those pianists who have the use of only one hand.
I am unable to decipher the Hungarian note. The first line contains "Graf Zichy," name.
"Budapest," is clearly seen as is "Zichy" at bottom of autograph.
I have not had the autograph authenticated.
