Vintage, 8" x 10", double weight, pearl finish
Inscribed and signed vertically in the borders in fountain pen:
"A Madam Clara Bell, / Emma Calve 1923"
Condition: very good with a crease and light paper loss to the lower
left corner, a couple spots and
light silvering to dark areas of the image, and some irregular adhesion
to the inscription and signature.
Emma Calve was a French operatic soprano; one of the most famous French female opera
singers of the Belle Epoque. She was a dramatic singer noted for her acting ability, stormy
personality, and dramatic intensity. She sang regularly and to considerable acclaim at the
Metropolitan Opera House, New York and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.
Born: 1858, Decazeville, France; died: 1942, Montpellier, Herault, France.
