Description
Double boxed Hamilton model 22 gimbaled chronometer. This is a nice example of a World War II era double boxed, gimbled Hamilton model 22 ship’s chronometer. It was designed and manufactured to meet the navigational needs of the U.S. Navy during W.W.II.
Specifically, this model 22 is a 35 size, 21jewel lever escapement type chronometer. it is installed in a heavy solid brass gimbled tub with a screw on base. The chronometer movement is inscribed as follows:
"HAMILTON WATCH CO.
MODEL 22-21 JEWELS
ADJ TO TEMP & 6 POS.
MADE IN USA
U.S. NAVY-BU. SHIPS 1943".
The serial number appears to be: “2F 28147”.
A detailed description of the Model 22 Chronometer can be found in Marvin Whitney's book,
Military Timepieces
.It is truly an impressive timepiece.
As far as I know, this chronometer is very good condition. It was professionally serviced about 5 years ago, at which time the original mainspring was replaced. I test it monthly alongside my other chronometers and it still keeps very good time.
The face, hands, and movement are all original and in excellent condition. The WW II lacquered navy brass has been left pretty much in its original condition.
This model 22 being offered is double boxed.
All of the hinges and glass on the three sectioned gimbled inner box appear to be original and in excellent shape. The front of the inner box contains a metal plate marked “HAMILTON WATCH CO. LANCASTER, PA.,U.S.A.”
There is a small plastic plaque on the inside of the inner box marked “IMPORTANT”, That describes the “safety setting feature ”of the Model 22.
There are some visible dings and scratches on the inner box reflecting its age, but overall is in in really good shape. It polishes up nicely.
The green felt lined out box is also in good shape. There are some stains on the bottom felt and the base is cracked(visible in the photo), but very solid. The carrying strap does not appear to be original and is in excellent condition. There is a “HAMILTON WATCH CO., LANCASTERPA., U.S.A.” metal plate on the front of the outer box also.
