Description
Autographed letter signed in a New Years card to the pianist-composer Mark Vladimirovich Milman (1910-1995), postmark dated January 2, 1978. The original transmittal envelope bears Schnittke's full autograph and address. The envelope also bears an autographed note signed by Milman on the outside.Shnittke writes:
Dear Mark Vladimirovich,
I wish you in New Year Happiness, Heath, Prosperity.
Hope the year is without worries, and troubles.
Hope - always luck in playing piano and writing and luck at the Conservatory.

Milman's note is to the Russian film Director Slava Tsukerman and his wife and business partner Nina Kerova.
Shnittke, (1934-1998) was a German born Jewish, later Russian composer. He was one of Russia’s most important and original post World War II composers. His work evolved from a Shostakovich influenced stylist to his unique “polystylism” he produced 9 symphonies, along with concertos, an opera, numerous film scores and smaller works. His autographs are uncommon.
Milman (1910-1995), both a pianist and composer studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Heinrich Neuhaus, Nikolai Goedicke and Nikolai Mysaskovsky. From 1935 to 1964 he was an instructor at the Moscow Conservatory and was appointed Professor in 1964 where he remained for the rest of his life. He took over the chamber program from Goedicke and taught pianoforte and composition. His pupils included, Alikhanov, Barshai, Kremer, Rozhdestvensky, Rostropovich, As a composer he wrote one symphony, one opera, one cantata, a swath of symphonic music including marches, overtures, orchestral suites, orchestral concertos, chamber music, solo instrumental music and duets, songs and choral music. Milman’s autograph is scarce!
