This is a terrific find for fans of the Streamline Moderne and Art Deco styles. It's a working, cast iron Scotch Tape dispenser produced by the good folks behind Scotch Tape, from a 1941 design by famed industrial designer Jean Otis
Reinecke
. A
n inexpensive entry point into the now often stratospheric world of Machine Age objects. These were produced in crackle finish; this one is a light green.
FYI, the 12th picture shows the original patent information for this dispenser, as published in the terrific 1990 book on patents, "Great Inventions, Good Intentions: An Illustrated History of American Design Patents" by Eric Baker and Jane Martin.
These dispensers were produced in various sizes over the years, and this is the second I've had. I do not believe it to be the large size; but in any case, it measures 9 inches long, 3 3/4 inches wide and 4 1/2 inches tall to the top of the spindle.
Its condition is used, with some paint wear, splatter and a missing foot. The spindle has a dent, but still spins fine, sits still given its hefty weight, and should still hold a roll of tape admirably.
